Glowing reports are coming in from the aurora zone
Fri Aug 30, 2013
Alan, photos of Aurora are beautiful, but what exactly are we looking at when we see aurora? Is it particles of air? light? electrical current? heat? sparks? bent light waves? What?
Yellowstone's Steamboat Geyser roars to life for first time in 8 years
Fri Aug 2, 2013
Probably caused by fracking ;-)
Kimchi fries and more decked-out taters for French Fry Day
Fri Jul 12, 2013
Just looking at the pictures made my stomach lurch! But then, I usually don't even want catsup on my fries. Just salt.
Video captures mudslide washing away a car in Colorado
Wed Jul 10, 2013
Notice the color of that mud. It's not the color of Colorado's reddish soil and rocks. It's black like ash. Lots of ash and nothing left to stop it. They need the rain, but it would help more if it still had some brush and trees to hold it. What a mess. Glad nobody was injured.
From giant squid to wooden legs, drug smugglers get creative
Thu May 30, 2013
One hundred and fifty-eight years ago some settlers who anticipated a shoot-out over whether Kansas would enter the Union as a free state or a slave state had some crates of "Beecher's Bibles" shipped to a little church near where I live. The crates actually contained rifles.
Manhattanhenge! A skyscraper sunset stops traffic in New York City
Wed May 29, 2013
I am SO glad I live in Manhattan, Kansas instead of Manhattan, New York! All I have to do to see a stunning sunset is to look west almost any evening of the year.
Friends spreading Internet hoaxes? How to make them stop
Sun Apr 28, 2013
The trouble is, I have friends who actually would believe that the president stopped all taxes. (They still truly believe he was not born in the U.S. and that he is a radical Muslim.) I also have friends who have "proof" that Snopes is itself a hoax. They are unstoppable because they are pre-c …
The end of tax-free online shopping draws nearer
Wed Apr 24, 2013
It's about time. For years I thought it was already a law. Then I bought something and had it shipped into a state that did not require the merchant to collect its sales tax. About a year later I got a boilerplate notice from the merchant saying that I should pay the sales tax (I w …
How did they feed 10,000 pyramid builders? Like this...
Wed Apr 24, 2013
Hmmm. Feeding 10,000? Reminds me of a smallish crowd at a Kansas State University basketball game. Hamburgers, hot dogs, barbecue, pizza, nachos, and plenty of toilet facilities. But most of the diners weren't wrestling 20-ton blocks all day.
Great Lakes' low water levels may get spring boost
Tue Apr 23, 2013
Last week, because of flooding, I read, the Chicago River was allowed to reverse and flow back into Lake Michigan for a while. Question: What does that mean for the protections that were in place to prevent the jumping carp from entering the Great Lakes?
